Staff in the School of Education at James Cook University in north tropical Australia are among world leaders in the SOSE key learning area, and have been involved in a range of research projects and current curriculum developments in the area at national and state levels.

Rob Gilbert

Rob Gilbert contributed to the Australian National Statement on SOSE, was part of the JCU team which wrote a draft SOSE syllabus for the Queensland Curriculum Council, and is involved in a number of BOSSSS committees in the social sciences. He has published widely in social education, and edited the recent book Studying Society and Environment: A handbook for teachers.

 

Helen McDonald

Helen McDonald teaches studies of society and environment curriculum method to primary and early childhood preservice teachers at James Cook University. She was part of the JCU team which wrote a draft SOSE syllabus for the Qld Curriculum Council. She has published particularly in the SOSE areas of active social investigation and using arts within socially critical SOSE programs and has conducted workshops with teachers on using cooperative learning in SOSE teaching.

 

Malcolm Vick

Malcolm Vick was part of the JCU team which wrote a draft SOSE syllabus for the Qld Curriculum Council. He contributed to the recent book Studying Society and Environment: A handbook for teachers. His particular interests in social education focus on the conceptualisation and organisation of the knowledge base for understanding society and for teaching SOSE.
